Commissioning of Ocean Observatory in Galway Bay

Aug 18, 2015   //

The team from Texcel Technology and Horsebridge Networks visited Galway Bay to connect and commission Ireland’s new national marine research and development infrastructure of a Cabled Ocean Observatory. Texcel Technology designed and manufactured the subsea Node and shore station systems. After system testing in the factory the Node was deployed and commissioning started. Within the first day the system was up and running with some fantastic HD images being sent back to shore in real time. The following week the team conducted commissioning testing and network management configuration. “We expect the Marine Institute of Ireland to undertake some amazing research with this infrastructure” said Peter Shawyer of Texcel.

Viprinet Targets UK with Horsebridge Deal

Jun 11, 2015   //

In a second “World Exclusive” at BWCS’ WiFi on Train Conference, Train Communications Systems 2015, bandwidth aggregator Viprinet has announced a tie-up with systems integrator Horsebridge Network Systems to help move it into the UK market.

Viprinet who has already deployed its wireless internet connectivity technology with train operators in Italy and France, has appointed Gloucestershire-based communication network and security infrastructure solutions provider Horsebridge Network Systems to spearhead its development of the UK market.

Viprinet CEO Simon Kissel commented, “With proven train operator deployments of our products already successfully in place in Italy and France we are delighted to be working with Horsebridge Network Systems to address the opportunities for operators here to further differentiate their services from other forms of transport by offering fast, reliable internet access to passengers.”

Typically access services used to date suffer frequent disconnections caused by long transmission times, the retransmission of lost packets and going through dead zones. Switching from cell to cell often adds to an already bad user experience.

Viprinet claims its bonding technology which uses patented forward error correction makes it possible to reconstruct lost packets sent over mobile networks rather than resending them. The advantages of this solution over competitive offerings are consistently low transmission times, no disconnections, and no bottlenecks due to retransmissions.

Horsebridge Journeys to the Bottom of the Sea……

Galway Bay Cabled Observatory

Horsebridge and Bridgeworx are working exclusively with Texcel Technologies to design, build, and deploy a fast optical Ethernet network to provide scientific services in the study to develop a national test and demonstration facility for marine energy and technology at an ocean energy test site in Spiddal County Galway.

The proposed Ocean Energy Test Bed will be deployed at the existing ¼-scale ocean energy test site and consists of:

  • Shore station interface at Spiddal Bay, Galway
  • Telecommunications cable between the  shore station and the wave energy test site providing power and data connectivity
  • Subsea test and monitoring platforms.
  • Floating sea station platform

The site will be used for the purposes of testing, demonstrating and validation of renewable energy devices and marine environmental sensors and technologies.

The cable will be installed in 2015 using the Marine Institute’s research vessel the R.V. Celtic Explorer and will come ashore at Spiddal Pier.

Marine instruments and sensors can be brought to the test site and plugged into dedicated science ports on the observatory. They can use power from the observatory or use internal power as desired; they can use the observatory’s data facilities or use internal data storage for posterior analysis, as deemed more suitable for the test and validation scenarios.

Smart Bay Ireland will be managing the network using Bridgeworx’ “Espy II” network management system, which enables visibility and management of the shore station, subsea node and interconnected scientific equipment allowing the test bed to be studied by the wider scientific community.
